The Minnesota Local Section of the American Chemical Society is pleased to announce the upcoming January 10th, 2019 meeting:
Male Contraception: Recent Progress
Presenter: Dr. Gunda Georg, Professor and Department Head at the University of Minnesota
Professor Georg and her group have published over 200 scientific articles and are involved in the design, semisynthesis, total synthesis, and evaluation of biologically active agents. Current therapeutic areas include cancer, male and female non-hormonal contraception, and epilepsy.
While female oral hormonal contraceptive agents have been on the market since 1960, the development of male hormonal contraceptives has been slow and no agent is yet available. Since the 1950’s, a multitude of clinical trials have been conducted to develop hormonal male contraceptive agents, but side effects and pharmacokinetic issues have prevented commercialization. The discovery and development of male non-hormonal contraceptive agents is an alternate approach that could finally provide men with a pharmacological agent for fertility control. General issues of male contraception, and recent progress in the field will be discussed.
